And by that I mean the huge meat and salami stand that was located last year a couple of rooms before the jewellery exhibition. If you have spent most of your adulthood – and I’m assuming that you probably haven’t – in Germany, like I have, you acquire the skill of smelling a good Blutwurst miles away.

Anyway, I already went to Germany this January and there will be no more deutsche Wurstis for me so let’s see what else I’ll be missing at Schmuck 2012.

If you happen to be in Arnhem, The Netherlands, between 04.11.2011 and 05.02.2012 watch your back. A beautiful piece of contemporary jewellery might get in your face, or under your shoes.

To make a short story long, the Dutch have done it again. The Museum voor Moderne Kunst (Museum for Contemporary Art) is presenting Art Jewellery Unleashed, with more than 30 contemporary jewellery artists showing their works in the most unsual way; they call it “Urban Jewellery”. You’ll find objects scattered all around the museum and the city, on walls, floors, streets and who knows what else, and all that will be combined with other works of art, such as photography, videos, books, installations and interactive projects.

The museum’s curators explain that “this type of jewellery has developed worldwide over the past forty to fifty years. Since the end of the 1960s, the Netherlands has played an important role in this development — a reason for the MMKA to collect and present these pieces of jewellery from the beginning”.

There’s something happening in Australia and New Zealand these days and I think it’s about time I left my arachnophobic excuses and visited these amazing countries.

For one thing, Helen Britton is exhibiting her work titled industrial at Gallery Funaki (08.11-03.12.11) in Melbourne. Originally from Western Australia, the artist is living and working in Munich and has a special eye for what she calls “industrial baroque”. This describes her work perfectly; she is inspired by industrial and construction sites, where “collection and selection of material” takes place, very much like the jewellery making process. She looks for meaning in all things that have lost their initial purpose and gives them new meaning, new use. I really admire her cheekiness after reading this: “I can make the precious look cheap and rubbish look unaffordable“.

I’ve had the luck of getting up close to this next artist’s work (and to see him work) at the last Schmuck exhibition in Munich and to tell you the truth, I did not expect that he would change the way I look at rings and semi-precious stones.

Karl Fritsch’ show Rings without End can be seen at objectspace gallery (04-23.11.11) in Auckland. He was born in Germany, studied at the Goldsmith’s College in Pforzheim and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and has been making rings since 1992. He uses rusted nails among other materials and provokes all kinds of reactions with his non-traditional stone-settings. In some pieces he even dares to cover the stones, to make the wearer look for them. Absolutely stunning, I say.
