There’s something going on in Athens lately because I’m happily surprised by the number of jewellery exhibitions that are taking place. It seems as if in the midst of socioeconomical crisis (or because of it?) people want to get seduced by the arts, right?
Niki Stylianou and Dora Charalambaki are two jewellery designers who have decided to chart their creative process and see what happens when the artist tries to materialize the inner discussion that takes place between the Self and the Creator. They examine what makes opposites attract, what kind of reaction is created by a certain action and how the subconcious may manipulate the concious side of the mind. I especially enjoyed the sketches of the two artists, which show the progress of developing their ideas on paper and then transcribing them in the materials they chose.
Niki’s work is dominated by a combination of metals, patinas and warm colours. Dora’s pieces are mostly made out of elegant porcelaine shapes, fragile and robust at the same time.
The show takes place at M Art Space which opened in Kolonaki in 2005, as Mr. Andreas Manolioudakis (founder and director) explained to me. “Dipola” (Dipoles) is an exhibition that you shouldn’t miss if you love contemporary jewellery and happen to be in Athens till the 30th June, so why don’t you go see it and then let us know what you thought of it?
Please excuse the poor quality of the pictures, I only had my cell phone with me but I hope I’ll find some better photographs to upload soon.
